The weather has been less than inspiring these last few days. I went out to collect firewood this afternoon and the wind was icy with a mean chill, the sky dark and no hint of it letting up for the next few months. Any growth I’ve had in the new vegetable garden has been hindered by either rat/mouse or insect predation. We have a house rat we call ‘Scratchy’. He lives in the celling and meanders in the stud walls at night keeping us entertained. Hopefully he won’t last long, with the installation of a poison station in the roof. Sorry Scratchy….we used to be such friends but then I had to go kill you and stuff. Sorry about that.
The cold weather is definitely a time to celebrate delish heart warming food. I’d like to be making more dish’s with the woody flavoured wild mushroom the Saffron Milk Cap but the cool weather is making the pickings rather slim. But I did manage to pick enough for a risotto, with a cheeky little topping of fried chorizo and mushrooms, with a little added love from dried Italian porcini.
The little one ate two plates of it for lunch!!!!

It was a pre-road trip breakfast meal that I needed for the 8 hour return trip to pick up my new little mate….Henry.

I can’t spell this dish properly….but it’s a ripper week night meal. Super frugal and tasty to boot. It’s tomato, egg, cheese, onion. Simple. Yum. Although you guessed it……I suggested it could do with…..chorizo.
Sadly our local veg grower supply dude has run out of the last summer veg. I guess his poly-tunnels are empty. Now it’s really time for relying on winter reserves!!!
I’ve been making many hearty chilli infused bean stews with my dried beans, fresh kale and passata being the main ingredients, along with a few cured sausages or bacon, herbs and plenty of garlic and fresh parsley to ward off the winter nasties.
Oh and Hanging Rock late afternoon light. On the way home from the long drive we took to pick up Henry.
