I found a well established pear tree on an abandoned block of land that I recently inspected as a potential site for my small scale farm dream. The area was originally settled by Italian families around 150 years ago and what remains (along with the ruins of the old stone homesteads) are little orchards, a reminder of the people that once lived off this land. We often drive around the country looking for that perfect block, and sometimes we come across some gems, like this block that had a creek running through it, an old orchard and one of the biggest walnut trees I’ve ever seen. It must have been planted 150 years ago. And right next to the gigantic walnut stood a few old pear trees. The fruit looked ripe, there was plenty of it, so I grabbed a few.
A week ago I bought a pork rack roast from the farmers at Greenvale Farm and was going to make an apple and cinnamon sauce from some apples that my mate Fran gave us recently, but we loved them so much they got eaten straight away. So my next best option was to utilise these foraged pears. Honey baked goodness! Worked well with the pork and roast garden veg. Should I pop it in the recipe book?
My oath you should. Looks mouthwateringly good and I love the fact that the pears were foraged, the carrots and spuds home grown (guessing), and the pork purchased from a local farm. It’s almost the model dish. And I’ll bet that crackling was something else!
I love the old daffodils and fruit trees that mark where somebody settled long ago. Dinner looks grand.
Same here! It’s almost as good as having a house still standing there! Out our way we have a heap of old farm houses like this. If only I had the cash to buy one :-(
This is epic news about your cookbook Rohan!! Can’t wait.
Only a few more weeks and I’ll have everything supplied to the publisher. It’s been a long process but I’m hoping it will be a reward of sorts when I hold it in my hands!
If that old walnut tree could talk, the stories it could tell…
And yes! Add to the recipe book! Why ever not?
Waiting not so patiently for that book of yours…
Ro, are you getting swamped with offers of land yet? I’m sitting here salivating at the prospect…
Mate I wish!!!! The block I’m looking at is $280k….way out of my league! But a stunning parcel of land with such amazing potential
I’m with everyone else – yes add it please!
That block definatley sounds like the stuff dreams are made of…and from!
The chance to nurture and rekindle what has gone before is very comforting and deeply satisfying.
My god you have some truly stunning photos.. please share your methods with those of us just learning? Begging, begging… Do you use Photoshop?? Which camera lens?? Anyway.. in any event.. to answer your question.. yes!!
I love pear and pork together. I always make pear chutney from the foraged pears we find, and I almost always use it to accompany meat. There’s just something about that pairing that is delicious! That was a long winded way to say, yes, put it in the book!
My mouth is watering looking at that photo!!
I’m eagerly waiting for your book too. Maybe it will make you rich and you can buy your Walden?
at the moment i’m hard pressed to imagine something that has the ability to make me feel more like a king than the roasting of meat alongside fruit. something about them together…..
Oh yeh, that should most definitely go in the book. That looks beautiful.
Yum! This had me thinking-What times tea?:) definitely one for the book!
he he!!! Well it’s easy to make and delish to eat!!!! ;-)
That looks delicious! And the plot of land…sounds like a dreamy wonderland.
If only it was a reality.
We should dream big (^^,)
