The last handful of heirloom ‘Periform’ sat on my window-sill for the last week, the sun magnified through the glass of the kitchen window making the most of the Autumn heat and finishing the ripening process. It seemed fitting to send off the last of the seasons tomatoes with special treatment. Meredith’s goats cheese, ripe avocado, Gisborne Olive Oil, the last handful of fresh garden basil sitting on wholemeal milled toast. A simple gardeners breakfast, but such a special delight, and I say that very seriously. Both Kim and I oohh’d and aaarrh’d, a sure sign that this basic marriage of ingredients worked. Thank you nature. It’s been an odd season but at least you blessed us with a few handfuls of pure joy. Fingers crossed next season delivers the same.
