Not at all related to the Northern Hemisphere species, but so named by early settlers due to the general appearance of a salmonoid variety.
Many anglers complain about these fish, the bones and the ‘bland’ oily flesh. I however love them. Smoking them brings them to a totally new place, flavour wise. Such a neat little source of fish meat, I’m always happy when they show themselves on the end of my line.
These two I caught on a 12ft surf rod 50 metres from our camper over the sand dunes. Tough life.
